ITHACA, NY —
The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series at Ithaca College will offer
a showing of “A Jihad for Love,” featuring the stories of lesbian and gay Muslims,
on Monday, March 2.
The screening, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in Textor 102.
The first feature documentary to explore the complex global intersections
between Islam and homosexuality, “A Jihad for Love” was filmed in 12 countries
and 9 languages.
A gay Muslim himself, producer/director Parvez Sharma went to where the silence is loudest,
filming at great risk in nations where government permission to make this film was not an option.
Defining jihad as a “struggle” rather than a “war,” the film depicts Muslims
whose pursuit of love has brought them into conflict with their countries,
their families and even themselves.
“A Jihad for Love” has won numerous international honors,
including best documentary at the Image + Nation, Tri-Continental, Torino Gay and Lesbian,
and Mix Brasil film festivals.
Sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Education,
Outreach, and Services, the Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series is presenting screenings
this spring focusing on the topic of “Intersections of Sexuality and Faith in Film.”
