Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender TV roles
The most prominent gay, bisexual and transgender characters
on network television this season:
"Bones'' (Fox): Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) —
one of Jeffersonian's top analysts and Bones' best friend — is bisexual.
"Brothers & Sisters'' (ABC):
This series probably has more gay characters than any onTV, including two leads:
Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) and Saul Holden (Ron Rifkin).
Last season, Kevin married his partner, Scotty Wandell (Luke Macfarlane).
"Desperate Housewives'' (ABC):
There's Andrew Van De Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom), Bree's son,
and neighbors Lee and Bob (Kevin Rahm and Tuc Watkins).
"Dirty Sexy Money'' (ABC): Carmelita (Candis Cayne) —
the lover of Patrick Darling (Billy Baldwin) — is transgender.
Cayne is the first transgender actress to appear regularly on a network series.
"Grey's Anatomy'' (ABC):
OK, so far they've only kissed, but doctors Callie Torres (Sarah Ramirez)
and Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) seem like a couple in the making.
"House'' (Fox):
Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) — a new member of Gregory House's team —
has made it clear she's bisexual.
"The Simpsons'' (Fox):
Gay characters pop up on a regular basis, but the most prominent
is Waylon Smithers (voiced by Harry Shearer).
"Ugly Betty'' (ABC): It's set in the fashion world — of course, there are gay characters.
Most prominent: Marc St. James (Michael Urie), the flamboyant
(in the best sense of that word) assistant to Wilhemina Slater (Vanessa Williams).
Transgender publisher Alexis Meade (Rebecca Romijn) was a lead last season
but is now a recurring character.
